Boundary Waters Journal Writers/Photographers Guidelines

The Boundary Waters Journal (BWJ) is a full color 106 page quarterly magazine featuring articles about wilderness recreation, nature and conservation within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), Quetico Provincial Park and Superior National Forest.

SUBMITTING ARTICLES: BWJ publishes in-depth articles that help readers enjoy their trips to canoe country. Articles must be informative, entertaining and inspiring. Subjects include detailed wilderness canoe trip journals, fishing how/where to, camping advice, hiking trips, wildlife profiles, history, natural resource issues, fiction, wilderness essays, hunting, winter camping/activities and interesting area people.

Most BWJ articles are unsolicited freelance submissions. Manuscripts are generally reviewed/responded to within 30 days. Submit stories as hard copy not electronically. Include a SASE for return/response. Upon acceptance author must sign, return and abide by the terms of the BWJ Writer’s Agreement. BWJ will pay $200-$500 for feature length articles (2,000-5,000 words). Payment is made within 30 days of publication. Payments for photos are made separately. See below.

SUBMITTING PHOTOGRAPHS: BWJ strives to publish the highest quality color photography of our coverage area. We prefer bright colorful shots of something happening within the canoe country setting. We rarely publish pure scenics, sunsets, etc. Placing a person, canoe, tent, etc. in the photo, fishing, paddling, portaging, camping, etc. is a plus. Take vertical shots when possible. They can run as full page or half page. Horizontals can only run as half page or less.

BWJ accepts high resolution digital photos (preferred) or 35 mm color slides. We cannot use print film, slide duplicates or low resolution digital images. We prefer Digital SLR cameras (6.0 megapixels or greater). Shoot photos on the highest resolution setting of your camera. Saved images must be at 300 dpi. Submit all digital photos on a CD in .jpeg or .tiff file format. NO e-mail images please. Submit the raw unaltered images. Include a plain paper color proof of each shot and a SASE for return/response. Payments will be $50 for half page or less, $100 for full page and $150 for cover or two-page spread. Payment is made within 30 days of publication.
